Pursuing God?

5 Jun

Something I’ve been thinking about recently is this:

Do we pursue God? or Does God pursue us?

I have recently re-read A New Kind of Christian with a gap year worker who is currently working with me. In it Brian McLaren quotes C S Lewis from Surprised by Joy where Lewis refers to God pursuing him. This is also the image we get from a number of the chronicles of nania.

A few weeks back i saw a couple of minutes of a programme about the worlds shortest people where the interviewer asks one young man when he found God to which the reply was, “I never found God, it was him that found me.”

How much time we spend trying to pursue God compared to letting God find us? I think that there are probably elements of both but its something to ponder upon.

I think you are right in that it is a bit of both – but maybe God’s search for us has a greater urgency about it. The parables of the lost sheep and the the prodigal son seems to suggest so.
