Running on Empty

12 Jun

I finished this book last week and loved it. To be frank there’s nothing new under the sun in here but it is a good collection of disciplines and ideas.
The book starts out by charting the account of the author (a youth worker/pastor) who basically burns out in a serious way on a couple of occasions. It’s an honest account on what was going on externally and internally to bring him to this point.
It then goes into chapters on specific subjects which have formed the healing process but more than that have become disciplines to stop him getting to that place again. The chapters include: Solitude, Prayer, Sacred Scripture, Spiritual Direction, Sorrow and Joy.
It’s been a book in the right season for me, although it’s not lifted me weariness it has however helped me within that.
This is a good read and the bibliography pays homage to some great saints and has left me some other ‘must reads’
