I have just finished the book ‘Onward’ by Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz. It charts Schultz’s return to the helm of Starbucks during a time where business was hard and that they had lost their original vision for the business.

As Schulz tries to restore the vision, to create a renewed energy he points to a phrase that he used, he talks about Getting Dirty, Getting in the Mud to get back to the roots of the business.

I wonder if this is something the church can learn from, perhaps it’s in a sense what Fresh Expressions or Missional Community are striving towards. Perhaps for too long some churches have become or at least been seen to become about provision of religious services. Do we need to restore that vision of getting back into the mud, dirt, confusion, messiness and complication of peoples lives. Walking alongside, being there and serving where we can.

I wonder if the need to keep the show on the road, to keep everything going, both the good and the bad can lead to a sense of paralysis and loss of the vision that people are at the heart of God’s mission.
